Candlelight memorial. Engage, Educate, Empower!


On May 15th, National Center for AIDS Prevention together with "Positive People Armenian Network" social NGO held a public event dedicated to the International AIDS Candlelight memorial day in Northern Avenue, Yerevan, with the theme  "Engage, Educate,Empower"

The aim of the event was to inform society about the importance of testing, to encourage people to take an HIV test, and also to change the existing stereotypes about testing in society.

Passersby had an opportunity to take a free and anonymous HIV rapid test and get the result only within 15-20 minutes. Counseling was provided to all passersby who wanted get tested. Testing and counseling were provided by specialists from the National Center for AIDS Prevention in the mobile clinic donated to Armenia from the Russian Federation. In total, 90 people undertook HIV test.

The event ended with the candle lighting on a symbolic Quilt with the form of "514''signifying the number of people who died from AIDS in Armenia.Within the event, a panel with the shape of a red ribbon, symbolizing solidarity of people living with HIV/AIDS, was set at the Northern Avenue. Passersby and people who got tested were offered to pin the red ribbons on a panel that symbolize of their joining to fight against the epidemic.

Candles with symbolic messages made by people living with HIV and information materials were given to passersby.
